Improving Mental Health - Focussing on getting the details of a recipe correct, forces you to leave behind negative thoughts or anxieties and decompress - if you don’t concentrate on the instructions, you’ll get a bad cake! I find that baking is a delicious way of switching off and giving your brain a break from daily stresses - my son’s birthday cake took all of my attention for a whole day and I loved it! Education - Teaching children about food is not something generally done at home. Baking enables parents to have discussions about where ingredients come from and having a healthy diet. During the baking process itself you realise how much sugar and fat goes into cakes or biscuits - hopefully this will make people more conscious about their food choices. Life Skills - So many essential skill can be taught through baking - following multi-step instructions, maths, money matters etc. Baking is a trade that will suit lots of those people who wouldn’t excel in traditionally academic subjects. It can be a just a hobby, or can become a high flying career in the culinary world. Pride - When children have taken the time and effort to make something themselves, they love to show off! Seeing others eat their food, hearing yummy noises and receiving compliments gives them an immense sense pride and self-confidence. It spurs them to want to bake again as kids love getting praise - don’t we all? Fun - Messy, sticky and tasty! Baking is a great way for families to spend time together and bond. All ages can contribute, it doesn’t involve any screens and it actively encourages parents to communicate with their children in a relaxed environment. Click here to do wnload this article.
